“Behind Every Great Man” by artist Caitlin Marx references the famous quote “Behind every great man is a great woman”. Conceptually, my piece is about the professional exploitation of women. Throughout history women have been abused for the professional gains of men and have had their research, hard work and bodies stolen for the gain of others. To begin to get viewers thinking about this I illustrate the dynamic between sheep and man, or the harvesting of animal products for mans benefit. I wanted people to envision that the jacket was made from the skin of another sheep, and then think about the gender implications based on the other symbolic elements. I que the viewers in to the ideas of femininity with the historical connections between woman and fiber arts and the color pink. People are instantly drawn to the sheep because of how joyful the sculpture seems, but as they think more about it is gets more complex as the implications of patriarchal power dynamic are realized. This subject is something that is very personal to me, and very personal to every woman I know.
